NOT ON MY WATCH

⚓ ANCHOR TEXT:

Genesis 35:17–19 (KJV)

17 And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.

18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.

19 And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

✍️ One of the privileges and responsibilities God gave to man is the authority to give names to people and things. In Scripture, a name is more than a label; it often speaks of identity, destiny, and expectation.

There are only four recorded instances in the Bible where God personally gave a name to an individual before birth:

- Isaac

- Solomon

- Josiah

- Jesus

Most other people received their names from their fathers or the heads of their families according to custom.

There are, however, a few instances where mothers named their children, and in some of those cases the names reflected painful circumstances.

Please note: This is not to suggest that women should not participate in naming their children. Rather, it is a metaphor showing how painful experiences can shape negative identities if they are left unchallenged.

Our anchor text presents one such example. Rachel, while dying in childbirth, named her son Benoni, meaning son of my sorrow. Immediately, his father intervened and changed his name to Benjamin, meaning son of the right hand.

The father refused to allow a painful moment to define his son's future.

"Not on my watch" means, "I will not allow this to happen while I am responsible." It is a declaration of authority, responsibility, and protection.

The phrase originated from military and maritime traditions, where a "watch" referred to the period during which a guard or sailor was responsible for the safety of others.

Consider these biblical examples:

(1) Ichabod — Who was his father? Where was his father when his mother named him Ichabod ("The glory has departed")?

(2) Jabez — The same question applies. Where was his father when his mother named him out of her pain?

(3) Benjamin — Here was a father who rose to his responsibility and refused to let sorrow define his son's destiny.

Fathers, this should be our attitude.

We must plant our feet firmly on the ground, strike the table if necessary, and boldly declare:

“Not on my watch!”

Not on my watch will my children carry a wrong identity.

Not on my watch will my children become addicts, drug dealers, or children of Belial.

Not on my watch will the enemy dictate the future of my family.

Let fathers arise and prophetically shut down every crack house.

Let us pull down the altars of Baal.

Let us stand as watchmen over our children.

There was a season when I continually declared:

“None of my children will write the same examination twice.”

Today, that declaration is becoming a testimony.

My son gained admission into a premier university on his first attempt. My second child has also passed JAMB successfully and is awaiting admission.

The words we consistently declare in faith shape the atmosphere around our homes.

Not under my watch will our city be overrun by bandits.

Not under my watch will souls perish without intercession.

I will pray, watch, and proclaim God's Word over my family, my community, and my generation until His Kingdom is established.

🙏 DECLARATION

I receive grace to stand as a watchman over my family.

I am committed to praying and watching over my children, my household, and my community.

Not on my watch will Satan invade the lives and destinies under my care.

I reverse every negative identity, label, and pronouncement over me and my seed, in the mighty name of Jesus.

Good morning!

Are we GOOD TO GO?
